The new Speaker of the Uasin Gishu County Assembly Philip Muigei has called upon journalists in the county to report effectively on the matters of the house as he assured them that his office will put in place proper structures to facilitate ease of access to information.
The speaker commended the media for its role in informing the public of the development projects carried out in the county as well as the activities carried out in the local assembly.
He said he is looking forward to establish a good rapport with the members of the fourth estate by working closely with them through a media liaison officer who will avail any required information to facilitate their access to the county assembly chambers to follow up on the proceedings.
“The first assembly of this county did a good job to see more than 50 bills passed into law, the second one passed about 25 bills, I will work hand in hand with the MCAs and I am sure by the end of this term we will pass more than 50 quality bills,” said Muigei.
To ensure journalists get updates on the agenda of the motions and to be informed on the issues to be discussed, the speaker promised to give journalists agenda for the week by Friday prior to the motion day on Tuesday, as well as publishing the same information on the county assembly’s public website.
Regarding lack of enough space at media gallery in the assembly, the speaker promised to address the issue in one to three years’ time to create enough space for journalists when covering the proceedings in the assembly.
Additionally, concerning the issue on induction of journalists on parliamentary process, Muigei said he will consult with the parliamentary service board for approval on the same and get back to them through the county assembly’s media relations officer.
