Over fifty youth from Kajiado County have benefited from a national government sensitization exercise against drug and substance abuse to commemorate the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
Speaking at PCEA Ngong Church, Kajiado North sub-county Assistant County Commissioner Bathsheba Osiemo reiterated the commitment of the national government to fight against illicit drugs. She urged the youth to abstain from drugs and alcohol abuse citing the negative socio-economic impact of the vice.
“Drug abuse kills 200,000 people each year. The national government is committed to a drug-free society. No matter what your situation is, remind yourself you have a choice to say no to drug abuse,” Osiemo said.
She urged the youth to focus on self-development through education and sports and collaborate with the national government in sharing information about those involved in the sale of illicit drugs and alcohol.
Kajiado North and Kajiado West sub-county Youth Development Officer Thomas Mose said the youth sensitization exercise will help in the realization of the Vision 2030 and the national government Big Four Agenda of creating sustainable safe spaces for the youth.
“Many youths in Kajiado have been directly affected by drugs and crime because of high unemployment rates. Empowering the youth through sensitizing them on matters regarding their health is important to achieve the social pillar of youth empowerment in Vision 2030 for the development of the country,” said Mose.
Ongata Rongai ward administrator Samuel Muchiri lauded national government administration officers and the Nyumba Kumi elders for their joint efforts in the fight against drug abuse.
“The biggest challenge in Kajiado has been the sale of bhang. Chiefs and Nyumba Kumi elders have been actively involved in the fight against illicit drugs. We have had many forums to sensitize people and create awareness against drug abuse, “said Muchiri.
