Inmates from the Kericho Women Prison yesterday received gifts from the Kenya Red Cross Society as they commemorated World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day.
The prisoners, some of who have children aged below 4 years, received blankets, mats, shoes, sanitary towels, and sanitizers for use in their home away from home-the prison. The inmates also got inspirational talks from the Red cross officials.
Speaking during the event, the Kericho County Red Cross Coordinator Siphia Tuei said it was a global day to celebrate the uniqueness and unity of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.
Tuei added that this year, Kenya Red cross was putting kindness in the picture and encouraging people around the world to be humane noting that the past months and years have been marked by multiple crisis that have spared no one and have hit the most vulnerable people the hardest—from Covid-19 to the climate crisis, humanitarian emergencies and escalating conflicts.
“But despite the challenges, there is so much hope and humanity to be found in the form of acts of kindness and that is why we decided to celebrate the day at the Kericho Women Prison because it was also Mother’s Day and a majority of the inmates are mothers and we felt we needed to pay them a visit to motivate them,” said Tuei
Tuei further remarked that no matter how big or small, acts of kindness make a huge difference in people’s lives “and we believe that acts of kindness have the power to spark a ripple effect, to multiply, to spread across communities, countries and the whole world.”
“We believe in the power of kindness. So, this World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day, we’re celebrating all types of acts of kindness and showing how, together can have global impact,” Stressed Tuei
The Red cross officials also donated condoms to the members of the public on the streets of Kericho Town passing the message on the use of protection and how to prevent spread of HIV.
The World Red Cross Day is the annual celebration of their principles when people in every corner of the world pay tribute to the humanitarian agency for their amazing contribution to helping people in need.
