KIMC student murder suspects detained for further investigation

The main suspects in the murder of a 19-year-old Kenya Institute of Mass Communication (KIMC) student were yesterday charged with her death at the High Court in Kiambu.

The three, John Wanyoike Kibungi, 24, and his accomplices Kanaiya Kamau and Brendan Muchiri were yesterday arraigned before Kiambu Principal Magistrate Grace Omondho.

Wanyoike, the main suspect who has been on the run since Saturday, was arrested at a hideout in Kirigiti area in the wee hours of Sunday morning as he prepared to escape.

It took combined efforts from a team of detectives and regular police officers based at Kiambu police station to arrest them.

Preliminary police reports showed the body of 19-year-old student, Purity Wangechi, was found disposed off the road at Mburiria area on Saturday morning with visible stab wounds and strangulation marks.

Wangechi is said to have fallen in love with the prime suspect and had been in a relationship for some time before she discovered that he was a serial thug. She is reported to have confronted him which led to their break up.

According to a police report, the deceased, on Friday, left the country’s premier media institution to meet Wanyoike in Kirigiti, to try and rekindle the dying embers of their once blossoming love but ended up walking into a death trap.

Police recovered a vegetable knife that was concealed in his waistband, which is suspected to be the murder weapon.

The suspects were detained for 14 more days at Kiambu police station to conclude investigations as well as take the accused for mental assessment tests to ascertain if the three are fit to stand trial.

The case is set to be mentioned on 3rd June 2022.
