A Prison’s Warden was yesterday allegedly abducted by unknown people along Homa-Bay- Rongo road while enroute home from work in Kisumu county.
The man identified as Bernard Ochieng, a warden at Kibos Prison was reportedly abducted by unknown people who were armed with guns.
He was traveling in a public service vehicle from Kisumu to his home in Nyandiwa, Suba Sub County when the incident occurred.
His wife Lilian Atieno said she learnt of the disappearance of her husband through his friend who was with him during the incident
She said earlier, her husband called her saying he had taken leave from work and left Kisumu for Nyandiwa.
“He told me he will join us for lunch but we are still waiting for him,” Atieno said.
Atieno said she was called by the man’s friend at half past one that her husband had been abducted. This was 30 minutes after she last spoke to her husband.
But the information about the abduction got to police several hours later.
She was told an unidentified Toyota Probox approached the PSV that the Warden had boarded before four men alighted from the probox and ordered the driver of the matatu to stop.
“I was told they were four, all armed with guns. Their car was in front of the one my husband had boarded before it blocked the road,” she said.
Ochieng is said to have been handcuffed and taken inside the probox by the abductors before they sped off. Nobody could identify the men who had civilian clothing.
After the incident, the rest of the passengers proceeded with their journey until they got to Nyandiwa more than two hours later.
Atieno faulted the passengers for failing to report the matter to police at the right time.
She said the case was first reported at Nyandiwa police station when it could have been reported at a police post at Kabunde, just a few meters from where the incident happened.
Atieno said she has not been informed about the whereabouts of her husband as she appealed to security agencies to speed up investigations into the matter.
“I am a house wife and have four children who depend on their father,” she said.
Homa Bay Directorate of Criminal Investigations Officer Abed Kavoo said they have launched investigations into the matter.
