Ongata Rongai business owners lose property in fire incident

Businesses situated in the Olerai area of Ongata Rongai, Kajiado County were over the weekend destroyed by fire, with affected investors counting losses worth millions of shillings.

A victim Abednego Kyalo said he lost all his property in the fire incident at the predominantly business area.

“I received a call at about 11pm that my furniture shop was on fire. I have lost everything which was worth about Sh 500,000 and I do not know where to begin,” said Kyalo.

Kyallo’s colleague Rose Katheu whose grocery shop was reduced to ashes decried lack of fire engine in Ongata Rongai town and lamented: “I lost property of about Sh. 20,000. The fire department arrived late at the scene and was not able to help in putting out the fire because they did not have enough water in their tanks.

Outgoing Kajiado Senator Peter Mositet called on Kajiado county government to improve its disaster preparedness response to counter fire outbreaks.

“Fire outbreaks have led to destruction of a lot of property in Ngong, Bulbul and Ongata Rongai areas. The Kajiado county government should have a working fire truck and equipment to provide a quick response to fire outbreaks to minimize loss of property,” said Mositet.

The Ongata Rongai fire is the second in Kajiado North sub-county within a span of two weeks after a similar outbreak was reported in Bulbul town last week.
