Police exhume body of a granny in Murang’a

Officers from the homicide department on Wednesday exhumed the body of a 70 year woman who it is believed was murdered on Friday last week and buried in a shallow grave at Kirimahiga Village of Mathioya Sub County.

The old woman Joyce Wanjiru is alleged to have been killed by her 45-year old son, Samuel Mukiria who currently is in police custody.

The exhumation exercise took the better part of Wednesday morning hours under supervision of public health officers. The accused who is mentally disturbed is said to have confessed about the incident after he was confronted by members of the public.

The family’s spokesperson Mr. Joel Njema lamented how they spent a day looking for their kin after she was reported missing since Thursday of last week.

He decried the incident has been traumatizing them after learning the woman was murdered and the body buried in the shallow grave on the family farm.

Njema complained that the process to obtain a court order by the police has been slow and thus delaying the exhumation of the body.

“Delay to exhume the body subjected the majority of family members to a hard time. We could see the body in the shallow grave but could not remove it without a court order,” said Njema.

He added that the family has planned the burial to be on Saturday as they give police time to conclude investigations about the murder.

The area chief Lawrence Munga said the suspect has been arraigned in Kangema court where he pleaded guilty of the offense but the court gave the prosecution two weeks to take the accused for mental assessment.

“The accused will be arraigned before High court in Murang’a to take another plea after he undergoes a mental assessment,” added the chief.
