Police officer shoots himself in Gilgil

Police are investigating an incident in which a police officer allegedly committed suicide at an Anti-Stock Theft Unit camp at Eburu area in Gilgil sub-county on Wednesday afternoon.

Confirming the incident, Gilgil Sub- County Police Commander Francis Tumbo said the officer; Constable John Wambua was discovered dead in his room at about 2 pm on Wednesday after he allegedly shot himself in the chest.

He said Wambua locked himself in his room and shot himself in the chest and was discovered by colleagues who tried to rush him to Gilgil Sub – County hospital but he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The motive of the incident is yet to be known as no suicide note was found in the house.

His colleagues heard a gunshot from the room and when they went to check, they found him lying in a pool of blood with the weapon lying next to him.

The rescue team had to break into the house to access the scene as he had locked himself therein.

Mr Tumbo said the deceased had taken an off from duty and returned last week looking disturbed and efforts by colleagues to assist him did not bear fruits.

The body is now lying at Gilgil Sub – County hospital mortuary pending postmortem and further investigations into the unfortunate incident.

This is the latest such incident to happen in the service as dozens of police officers have died as a result of suicide, a trend that is attributed to stress at work.

Earlier this month, a senior police officer killed his girlfriend at the Mau Summit Police Station in Nakuru County before attempting to take his own life.
