Joy in Matithini village, Mbooni West Sub-County as residents and friends honoured and celebrated their teacher who has been teaching at the local public schools for the last 37 years.
Reginah Mwalyo a deputy head teacher, started her career at a neighbouring Ivuvuka primary school in 1985 as untrained teacher for 10 years before she was promoted to be a P1 teacher after college in 1994.
“I am forever grateful for my career as a teacher. I joined a profession dedicated to assisting young children achieve their potential, to realizing or finding their best selves in the job market,” said Madam Mwalyo while addressing residents and friends Thursday at her Matithini home during the celebration of 37 years of public service.
The event was attended by members Young Men Christian Associations (YMCA) led by Y’s Men of Kenya President Mr. Tom Waka who was the chief guest.
She attributed her successful career that started as untrained teacher in 1985 and promoted to a deputy head teacher in 2015 at Muumoni primary school to her first school head teacher who guided and mentored her well.
“The school bell was rang. Learners assembled and I was introduced to all teachers and learners as Mrs. Mwalyo by the late head teacher Mr. Daniel Muthungwa. By then I was very nervous and excited,” she described.
“Before that day ended I was given books of reference, books for preparing schemes of work, lesson plans, pupils’ progress records, biros and appointed class teacher to STD 6 by the then head teacher and class register given to me,” she added.
Mwalyo added that she feels happy that most of the students she taught in different schools have pursued their education to the university, tertiary institutions and other joined disciplined forces and they are changing lives of their communities.
During her successful career, Mwalyo taught in Ivuvuka primary from 1985 to 2000, Muumoni primary (2000-2015), Manzuvi primary in 2016 and she was transferred to Ivuvuka primary in 2017 till her retirement this year.
Besides her P1 certificate, Mwalyo holds a diploma course in management for both head teachers and deputies from Kenya Education Management Institute.
On his part, the area Y’s Men President Mr. Waka lauded Mwalyo for her exemplary public service.
“We really appreciate your 37 years of teaching service and we will support you in doing well to the society even after your retirement,” said Mwaka.
Waka also read the speech of YMCA international secretary general Jose Varghese who urged her to continue doing good work in the society.
Also present during the event was Chief Executive Officer at Kenya YMCA Jared Musima, Y’s Men Regional Director Patrick Kaptway and Lawyer Nicholas Wambua.
