Town thrown into water crisis due to unpaid electricity bill

Institutions in Masalani town in Garissa County are facing closure after a prolonged period of water crisis following an unpaid Sh1.4 million power bill.

Affected institutions include boarding schools, technical training institute and the sub-county referral hospital.

Sub County water coordinator Mr Ahmed Hussein said the county is holding negotiations with Kenya Power to restore electricity which was disconnected three weeks ago at the Masalani Water supply.

Thirsty residents have been forced to fetch raw water from the crocodile infested Tana River 6 kilometers away while those who are financially able buy their supply from water bowsers at Sh1,500. Others have been compelled to buy a 20 litres jerry can at Sh40 from cart owners.

The chief officer water services Mr. Ahmed Abdinoor said he is trying to ensure the electricity bill is paid and water services resume immediately.
