Two people died on the spot and 16 others were admitted in hospital with serious injuries, after a vehicle they were travelling in collided head on with a trailer, along Nairobi-Mombasa Highway in Mukaa Sub-county on Saturday.
The 3.20pm accident occurred at Kwa Muyu area, when a Trailer reg. NO. KBR 094N/ZE 1383, Mercedes Actoss, collided with a matatu reg. NO. KCG 828A make, Mistubishi FH, belonging to the Nairobi Friends Travelers Sacco, when the trailer driver, was overtaking a fleet of vehicles at the area.
The driver of the matatu and a passenger identified as Daniel Mburu Morara (20), died on the spot, while the injured travelers were rushed to Kilome Nursing Home Hospital for treatment. The driver of the trailer escaped with slight injuries.
“The matatu was coming from Nairobi heading to Mombasa and the trailer was headed for Nairobi from Mombasa. The accident occurred when the driver of the trailer was overtaking a fleet of vehicles in the area, in the process collided head on with the matatu,” said Makueni County Police Commander, Joseph Ole Naipeyan, while confirming the accident to KNA on Saturday evening.
He disclosed that both vehicles were extensively damaged and were towed to Sultan Hamud Police Station, awaiting inspection.
The bodies of the dead were moved to Kilome Nursing Home Hospital mortuary awaiting autopsy.
