Homa Bay County Commissioner Moses Lilan has expressed concern over rising cases of vandalism of transformers in the county.
Lilan warned that those behind the menace would use the full force of the law noting that security personnel were on high alert.
He said persistent power outages in parts of the county were occasioned by vandalism of electricity installation.
Speaking on Friday during the celebration to mark Mashujaa Day at Opanga Primary School in Rachuonyo East, the administrator also directed Chiefs to stamp out illicit brews in areas of jurisdiction.
He blamed the production and consumption of brews for rising cases of gender-based violence.
The county’s Deputy Governor (DG)Oyugi Magwanga who read a speech on behalf of Governor Gladys Wanga said their administration had prioritized health services in line with the national government’s rollout of universal health care.
Mr Magwanga said they aim to strengthen primary health care.
He said since their swearing-in, more people have been visiting public hospitals for services.
The DG attributed this to the improvement of health services provision.
He said the county government has renovated a number of health facilities.
“We expect the number to double in the coming years. We will ensure we strengthen health service delivery,” Mr Magwanga said.
He however acknowledged challenges faced in the health sector including triple threat (defilement, GBV, and new HIV infection).
However, with partnership, Mr Magwanga said Governor Wanga’s administration is working towards lowering the high disease burden in the county.
“We must safeguard our achievements and address challenges that lie before us,” the DG said.
Mr Magwanga also used the opportunity to ask residents to support food security by engaging in farming.
He said agriculture creates jobs and Homa Bay must not depend on other counties for food.
“I call for total commitment from residents to ensure we are food secure,” Mr Magwanga said.
Mr Lilan outlined government projects in Homa Bay including ongoing road construction.
President William Ruto visited Homa Bay earlier this month and launched a number of development projects including Mbita-Sindo-Magunga-Sori and Mfangano ring road, affordable houses, and rehabilitation of Homa Bay town pier.
Mr Lilan said all the projects will be completed to help residents.
“The affordable houses are almost complete and will be ready for occupation soon. This is besides the blue economy infrastructure projects in Kendu Bay and Oyugis,” the county commissioner said.
The administrator said the government is committed to ensuring Lake Victoria helps residents.
