94 per cent of candidates who sat for last year’s Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) in Narok County have been admitted to secondary school and vocational training centers.
Narok County Commissioner Isaac Masinde said the education department is collaborating with his office to ensure the remaining six per cent are accounted for.
“We have done a tremendous work of ensuring that almost all candidates who sat for the KCPE exam are in secondary school. However, we will leave no stone unturned until we know where the six per cent that is not accounted for is,” he said.
A total of 31, 795 pupils had sat for the national examination in the year 2021 in Narok County, where 16, 343 were boys and 15, 452 were girls.
29, 816 of the candidates have since joined form one in various schools in the country while 349 have joined vocational training centers. 339 others have repeated in class eight while two were reported to be deceased.
Commissioner Masinde said his office is looking for 503 boys and 438 girls around the county who have neither joined secondary schools nor vocational training centers.
“The government was clear that all pupils who sat for primary school education must transit to secondary school. In fact, learning at day secondary school is free of charge,” said Masinde.
He called on chiefs and their assistants to assist in looking for the pupils and ensure they go back to school despite the background.
“Even the young mothers who completed class eight should go to school. It is a crime to continue holding your children at home when they are supposed to be in school,” reiterated Masinde.
Trans Mara West and Narok East sub counties have the highest number of candidates yet to transit to secondary schools or vocational centers.
This comes a few days after the security team in Narok South Sub County was forced to sell eight sheep belonging to an old rich man who had failed to take her daughter to school.
