Imenti North MP Rahim Dawood has called on the government to fast track tarmacking of local roads, initially started by the national government but later abandoned by the contractors.
Speaking during Mashujaa day celebrations at Kinoru stadium, Dawood said he had been making efforts to ensure the contractors of various roads remained on site, but all in vain.
This, he added, has attracted a series of demonstrations by the concerned residents as their roads remained impassable, especially during the rainy seasons.
“There have been a number of demonstrations emanating from the dilapidated state of Tuskys-Coca Cola, Kwa Nthambi-Irinda-Magundu roads and we expect the same to take place again during this rainy season.
We are calling on the government to ensure these roads are improved considering that they link rural areas with Meru Municipality,” said the MP.
Dawood said for a long time he has been lobbying for the same including taking petitions to parliament.
“These are some of the roads that were launched in 2017 but not much has been done on them. Sometimes we keep quiet even when we see people demonstrating because we have given them empty promises for a long time,” he said.
The MP called on the County Commissioner as well as other Meru leaders to join him in lobbying for these projects in order to enhance linkages between the municipality and rural areas, especially in rich agricultural areas.
He called on the elected leaders in the County to stick to their roles as stipulated in the constitution in order to take the region to the next level in terms of development.
