Woman killed by an elephant

A 65-year-old woman died while another is fighting for her life after they were attacked by an elephant at Olposimoru area in Narok West Sub County.

Confirming the incident, the area Sub County police commander Kivinda Kilonzo said the two were on their way from Olposimoru market and on reaching Parmomplile area, they were attacked by an elephant that emerged from the bush.

Nayolang Nairoti died on the spot while her colleague Bikatu Shololo was rushed to Lenana Medical Facility and later referred to Narok County referral Hospital where she is recuperating.

Kilonzo confirmed that the body was removed from the site and taken to Narok County Referral Morgue awaiting postmortem.

He said the incident occurred at 7.30pm Monday evening warning residents against walking along the road in dark hours when elephants are known to be crossing the road.

Narok Senior Warden Richard Chepkony said there are approximately 2500 elephants at the Maasai Mara Game reserve and during dry seasons, the large animals roam in search of grass and water.

He asked residents to exercise caution while herding, collecting firewood or going to farm in bushy areas to avoid conflict with wild animals.

However, he reminded that genuine victims of human-wildlife conflict have a right to seek compensation saying individuals can claim compensation for loss of life, injury or damage of property.
