The green Anglican movement of Kenya has planted over 500 fruits and indigenous trees at Kapsiliot Girls secondary school in Elgeyo Marakwet.
The movement which aims at a greener and wholesome ecology has held similar activities in various schools where they also planted 1000 fruit and indigenous trees at ACK Chemngoror Girls Secondary School in Uasin Gishu County.
The tree planting exercise which was launched in June targets to plant at least 6500 indigenous trees and fruit seedlings in 50 institutions in the north rift region.
Rt. Rev. Johnmark Haung Godia said the movement is focused on adding greenery to the environment and their main focus is schools and institutions.
Apart from tree planting the movement holds peace walks and fundraisers to source for funds to purchase the seedlings that are being planted. “The seedlings we plant come as donations from various organizations,” said the Reverend.
He said that every day the effects of climate change are felt by different communities globally and nature has been significantly degraded by humans posing a risk to the survival of all elements in the ecosystem.
He called on land owners to increase indigenous tree cover within their farms and leave a separate space to plant timber and firewood so as not to encroach on forests and water sources.
“We have to work together to protect the earth, which is God’s gift to all of us and the generations to come,” he added.
He noted that everyone has a responsibility to contribute to the preservation of the environment so as to enjoy its output.
