Political leaders from Nandi County are pushing for the construction of Koitaleel Samoei University main campus in Nandi Hills which stalled in 2018.
Four years after the foundation stone was laid by the former President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy, the multibillion project which was expected to be completed in two years stalled due to lack of funds.
And now leaders led by Nandi Governor Stephen Sang are pushing for its revival to enable locals to get quality education. The leaders noted that Nandi is among the oldest administrative units in Kenya, created by the British colonial government yet it does not have a public University.
“The university will bring in a large amount of revenue on a yearly basis and increase the supply of human capital in the region that’s why we are advocating for its completion,” he said
The county boss stated that university education provides not only the high-level skills necessary for every labour market but also the training essential for teachers, doctors, civil servants, entrepreneurs, scientists among others
The learning institution which is named in honour of Nandi legend and freedom hero Orkoiyot Koitalel Samoei for his values of law, justice and humanity was allocated 100 acres of land at Koitalel Samoei Secondary school in Nandi Hills town.
The university upon completion is expected to establish a sports academy to serve the region known as the Source of Champion
Education stakeholders who spoke to KNA noted that having a University in the County has a lot of benefits calling on the government to allocate funds for the project to ensure it’s completed on time
They said apart from empowering the region, building institutions and nurturing favuorable regulatory frameworks and governance structures, university education is vital to the country’s effort to increase social capital and to promote social cohesion.
