Man, stuns court after pleading guilty to defilement charges

A man has stunned a Nyeri court after pleading guilty to charges of sexually molesting a 12-year-old boy.

Newton Mwangi who appeared to be in his mid-40s and donning short dreadlocks gave the startling response when he appeared before Resident Magistrate Mercyline Lubia.

Mwangi who appeared composed during the reading of the charges was accused that on 13th, June this year and at around 1 pm and with the intentions of sexually molesting the minor touched his genital organs and rubbed his hands on his backside.

The incident is alleged to have taken place in Kieni West sub county, Nyeri County. The offence is in contravention of the sexual offences act of 2006, which states that a person guilty of an offence under this section is liable upon conviction to imprisonment for a term of not less than ten years but which may be enhanced to life imprisonment.

The magistrate, who appeared equally taken aback by the suspect’s response was forced to warn him of the legal implications of his utterances in light of the charges levelled against him.

“You need to be aware that should you admit liability to the charges before you, you risk a jail term of up to a life imprisonment,” Lubia said.

Surprisingly, Mwangi who apparently appeared to have made up his mind, stuck to his words by pleading guilty to the charges.

The court eventually ordered him to be remanded at King’ong’o GK Prison until June 23 when the case is expected to come up for mention.
