A middle aged woman died on the spot yesterday when she was hit by a lorry at Pala market, Rachuonyo constituency.
The deceased identified as Ida Odira died when a lorry which had lost control ran over her and ploughed into a building in which she was operating a cereals and charcoal business.
Eye witnesses said Odira who teaches at a nearby primary school was offloading two sacks of charcoal from a motorcycle outside her business premise when the tragedy struck.
Residents said the incident occurred after the driver parked the lorry leaving behind his turn boy to go and collect receipt documents from shopkeepers he had supplied with the goods.
However, the turn boy switched on the lorry in an attempt to drive before losing control and hitting the woman.
“The lorry also crashed on the wall of the woman shop,” an eye witness said.
Kanjira Location Chief Eli Obuya said the woman died shortly after, due to profuse loss of blood and injuries she sustained on impact. He said their efforts to rush the woman to a nearby hospital proved futile as she succumbed to the injuries.
“Fortunately the boda boda man who was helping in offloading the charcoal from the motorbike did not die. He only sustained some injuries on his right leg,” Odira said.
Area Sub County Police Commander Lydia Parteiyie said they have launched a manhunt for the driver and turn boy who disappeared after the incident. The lorry was towed to Kendu Bay police station for inspection.
“We’re asking residents to assist with information on the whereabouts of the driver and his turn boy to enable us make arrests,” she said.
