3 policemen injured in IED attack in Garissa

Three security officers were injured after their vehicle was blown up by an Improvised Explosive Device in Garissa County.

Ijara deputy County commissioner Mr Willy Chemboi said the officers sustained injuries after suspected Al-Shabaab militants planted an IED that blew up the escort vehicle along the Garissa road.

He said preliminary investigation into the incident indicated that the three security personnel were escorting director of nomadic children for education programmes (NOCHEP) Harun Mohamed from Nairobi who was on official duties.

Chemboi said the vehicle with the security details were leading the convoy when it bumped into the IED but said no fatalities were reported during the incident.

Mr Chemboi said a team of officers from the Rapid Deployment Units (RDU) and others from the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) were dispatched to the area to comb through the thickets for the militants.

He said that area was a disturbed area and it is at the tip of the thick Boni forest where offshoots of the terror linked gang was operating

However, he said the director was safe as his vehicle was at the front and the militia target security vehicle.

He said the casualties of the attack including a senior officers and two national police reservist were flown to Manda military base in Lamu County for specialized treatment.
