The National Fund for Disabled of Kenya (NFDK) has kicked-off the disbursement of Sh19.3 million for People Living with Disability (PLWD) in Central region.
According to the distribution schedule for this year, institutions in Central region that support People Living with Disabilities will receive Sh8.3 million, while Sh11 million has been set aside to go towards supporting those with disabilities.
Speaking to KNA, Wednesday, at the Regional Commissioner’s Office in Nyeri town, NFDK Board Trustee, Dr Mike Kiswili, said that they intend to visit all the eight sub-counties, to offer them financial support.
During the brief ceremony, 15 people with disabilities in Nyeri Central received mobility aid devices, knitting and sewing kits, salon equipment and welding machines.
“For the last 10 years, NFDK has funded 16 institutions to the tune of Sh50 million. In Nyeri Central Sub-county, we have selected 15 individuals to benefit from assistance worth Sh500, 000,” said Kiswili.
Kiswili advised the beneficiaries to use the equipment effectively to better their living standards.
He discouraged them from selling the donated equipment to get quick cash as has been the case with some of the beneficiaries in the past.
“We have had cases of individuals selling their devices and we would love to advise you that these equipment are for your own good. Use them to earn a living, not selling them for easy cash,” he stressed.
Martin, a beneficiary of welding equipment from NFDK said that the fund had helped PWDs become self-reliant. He thanked NFDK and the National Government for bringing them help.
